A simple but complete guide to boosting your self-image

Creating a positive self image

Self-Image simply means, how you see yourself. Your sense of identity has to do with who you think you are and how you perceive yourself. It concerns your sense of self-worth and how you define yourself.

Your sense of self-worth and how you define yourself affect your mental health, your behavior, and how you relate with other people. It involves your personality, thoughts, feelings, and demeanor.

Origin of Self-Image

Dating back to the very cradle of human existence, man has always been obsessed and fascinated with how he looks, feels, interacts, and relates with his environment.

The All Supreme being (God) formed man from the dust and breathe into him, thereby making him a living soul. Thus, making man a conscious being.

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Genesis 2: 7 (KJV)

What was man conscious of?

Man’s first assignment proves to us what he was conscious of.

And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.

Genesis 2: 20

How was Adam able to do this? For only the manufacturer or creator of a product would know what name to call the product. As no one produces a thing and asks another to give it a name.

It shows that he was so God-conscious. He so interacted with God that he could peep into the mind of God and pick the original name God intended for every animal. So, we could out rightly say man at creation was God-conscious.

Adam was so intrigued by his environment that it took God to know that this man was alone and a helpmeet was provided for him.

And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

Genesis 2:18 (KJV)

On a certain day, Lucifer the chief deceiver invaded man’s atmosphere with a piece of false information as recorded below.

Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye, shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:  For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

Genesis 3:1,4-5

Man ate from this tree and his eyes were opened. For the first time, he noticed he was naked and fear was introduced to his ecosystem. At this point, man became conscious of himself, thereby birthing the philosophy of “Self Consciousness”.

Types of Self-image/Consciousness

  1. How you see yourself
  2. How do others see you
  3. How you perceive others see you
  4. How you perceive you see yourself

Why is self-image important?

A positive self-image is known to be important for positive development. Philosophically, one\’s identity can be rooted in the mind or in general existence (your heart).

For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he:

Proverbs 23:7a (KJV)

How to deal with self-image issues

  • The God Factor. A wise man once said, “when the purpose of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable”. Every product or material known and existing on earth today has a manufacturer or one who invented it. When a problem arises, all that’s needed is to go to the manufacturer.

But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.

Isaiah 64:8 (KJV)

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations

Jeremiah 1:5 (KJV) .
  •  Change your mirror and get calibrated in your soul.

But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

2 Corinthians 3:18 (KJV)

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name\’s sake.

Psalm 23:3 (KJV)

It’s a known fact that, if you put a dark shade over your eyes, everywhere will seem dark to you even when the room is well lighted. God’s word (the Bible) is likened to a mirror.

The more you look into it, the more you get to know your true self, value, and worth. You feel less or you accept what your situations and surroundings tell you about yourself because you have over time failed to see what your creator says about you.

Calibration simply means to adjust by comparison with a standard. The soul of man is the seat of his consciousness.  It is the home for man’s will, mind, and emotions.

These three distinct and unique part of you defines your personality.  The quality of a man’s total experience, impact, and output is based on how sound his mind, emotions, and will are.

Your self-image is the mental picture you have about yourself. Images are formed when light is cast upon an object. Your mind’s eye works just exactly like a simple digital camera.

Sound and quality images can be taken when the lens is adjusted to allow for the exact amount of light.

You can only get a good image of yourself when you unclog your soul from the shadow cast upon it by your not-so-good life experiences and tune it to the image you have gotten from God\’s word.

  • Model your true identity. This can be done by setting quality principles and standards and having short and long-term goals and targets that will shape and mold you to become the original version of the picture you have gotten about yourself.

The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want.

Proverbs 21:5 (KJV)

And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.  For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.

Habakkuk 2:2-3 (KJV)

If you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you met, you’ll know that the world needs you to operate to your full potential.

Never be bullied into silence, don’t let your circumstances define you but define yourself.
